Lunch talk on Nov. 19, 2024

Unveiling Progenitors, Central Engines, and Radiation Mechanisms through Peculiar GRBs

Speaker: Jun Yang (NJU)

Venue: SWIFAR Building 2111

Time: 12:45 PM, Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2024

Abstract:

It is generally believed that gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) originate from the merger of compact star binaries or the core collapse of massive stars, typically leaving behind a black hole that serves as the central engine driving the jet. The interactions within and outside the jet produce the observed GRB and its multi-wavelength counterparts. However, growing observations have suggested that peculiar GRBs do exist. Our studies on these bursts have uncovered a diversity in GRB progenitors, provided strong evidence for magnetars as central engines of GRBs, and highlighted the dominant role of synchrotron radiation during the prompt emission phase of GRBs.
