Lunch talk on Sep. 30, 2024

Isolated neutron stars from X-ray survey data

Speaker: Adriana Mancini Pires (Institute of Geochemistry, CAS)

Venue: SWIFAR Building 2111

Time: 12:45 PM, Monday, Sep. 30, 2024

Abstract:

Since the discovery of the first radio pulsar more than fifty years ago, the population of neutron stars in our Galaxy has steadily grown in number and complexity. A handful of the sources, exclusively seen in X-rays, offer a privileged view of a variety of emission processes and evolutionary channels that cannot be probed through the bulk of the ordinary radio pulsar population. In this contribution, I review their properties and highlight the role of the XMM-Newton Observatory and SRG/eROSITA at complementing our view of Galactic neutron stars. I summarise the results of on-going follow-up efforts to identify new thermally emitting INSs, particularly with XMM-Newton and FAST, and discuss prospects for future investigations in the context of the aftermath of the eROSITA All-Sky Survey and the EU H2020 XMM2ATHENA project.
