Lunch talk on Dec. 04, 2023

Early-stage self-gravitating protoplanetary disk and computational methods for self-gravity

Speaker:Weixiao Wang (Tsinghua University)

Venue:SWIFAR Building 2111

Time:12:30 PM, Monday, Dec. 04, 2023

Abstract:

Part 1. Observing the early-stage, i.e. class 0/I, disks around protostars is hindered by the contamination of infalling envelope in collapsing molecular clouds and by the unknown dust grain size distribution and properties. Despite of that, the hints accumulate that the early-stage disks are subject to marginally gravitational instability. In this talk I will briefly review the role of self-gravity in class 0/I protostellar/protoplanetary disks, which is crucial to the initial condition for planet formation. Part 2. Poisson's equation governs the self-gravity. As a parabolic equation, it can be numerically solved by classic iterative methods such as Jacobi, successive over relaxation (SOR), Gauss Seidal (GS), etc. However, these classic methods have a huge cost in numerical simulations. I will introduce an efficiently low-cost method named Multigrid for solving the Poisson's equation and its implementation in simulations.
