Lunch talk on Oct. 12, 2020

The Supernova Remnant and Molecular Cloud Interacting System

Speaker:Qiancheng Liu(Nanjing University)

Venue:Video conference

Time:12:30 PM, Monday, Oct. 12, 2020

Abstract:

Supernova remnants (SNRs) and molecular clouds (MCs) interacting systems have attracted much attention, as the former are considered to be one of the most important cosmic-ray (CR) accelerators. The interaction between the SNR and MC can both affect the physical/chemical properties of the MC and produce high energy gamma-rays via p-p process. However, since the produced gamma-rays may also be produced via leptonic process, a careful study of the MC environment of an SNR could help to better understand both the origin of the high energy γ-ray emission and the dynamic of the MC itself. In this talk, I will present two examples, based on our carbon monoxide (CO) observations, to show that the selected SNR targets are highly likely to be associated with ambient molecular gas, and discuss some issues (the survival/heating of the MC, etc.) about the molecular material.
