Stellar Astrophysics and Galactic Archeology from Low-resolution Spectra
Large-scale, low-resolution spectroscopic surveys of stars are proving to be powerful tools for delivering new discoveries and tackling fundamental issues in stellar and Galactic astronomy and astrophysics. Ongoing and upcoming surveys, such as the SDSS I-IV, LAMOST, 4MOST, WEAVE, DESI, SDSS-V, and TAIPAN, have already yielded over ten million spectra and promise to deliver many more in the near future. Yet, the optimal analysis and the best astrophysical modelling and interpretation of these vast unprecedented data sets continues to pose an enormous challenge. In order to bring together experts of stellar astrophysics and Galactic archaeology with low-resolution spectroscopy to exchange experience and ideas, we plan to organize a workshop entitled as “Stellar Astrophysics and Galactic Archeology with Low-resolution Spectra” on June, 8--12, 2020, at SWIFAR of Yunnan University in Kunming, P. R. China.
The main topics of the workshop will include:
--- Survey plans and status, data reduction
--- Deriving stellar parameters and elemental abundances
--- Combining information from spectra, astrometry and photometry
--- Stellar structure, evolution, and yields
--- Binaries/multiple stars, stellar remnants
--- Galactic stellar populations and structure
--- Galactic chemical and dynamical evolution
--- Galactic archaeology and chemical tagging
Before the start of the workshop, SWIFAR will host a one-week long series of lectures during 1--5, June, 2020. The lectures will be given by a few most distinguished experts in the fields. The topic and speaker of the lectures will include:
--- Stellar structure and evolution
--- Stellar nucleosynthesis and yields
--- Binary evolution
--- Galactic chemical evolution
--- Galactic structure and dynamical evolution
