The first summer camp for excellent undergraduate students in astronomy was held from 16 to 17, July 2022 in a hybrid form of both online and offline at Chenggong campus, YNU. Twenty-three students, from Yunnan University, Guangzhou University, Shanxi University, West China Normal University, Kunming College and Yuxi Normal College, attended the event.
At the opening session, Professor Xiaowei Liu, director of SWIFAR, and Professor Li Zhang, former vice president of YNU from the school of physics and astronomy, presented general introductions about the developments of the astronomy discipline in Yunnan University, and the current status and the great potential for new discoveries of the 1.6 meter Multi-channel Photometric Survey Telescope (Mephisto), a cutting-edge key project initiated by our own and financially fully supported by YNU.
During the camp, Professor Zuhui Fan, Zhongxiang Wang, Associate Professor Bingqiu Chen, Yuanpei Yang and Dezi Liu gave lectures on the topics of cosmology, high-energy astrophysics, Milky Way structures, time domain astronomy and observational astronomy, respectively. They were very well received stimulating many questions from the students. In the following interaction session, a number of graduate students at YNU shared their campus life experiences. Profs. Xiaowei Liu, Zuhui Fan, and Xinzhong Er answered questions from the students and provided encouraging suggestions on graduate study and research.
The first YNU summer camp in astronomy is a great success. Many students expressed strong interests in coming to YNU to pursue their graduate study in astronomy
